Hi Jethro; I bought a brand new Savage in Feb 2000. The exhaust tone is not as quiet as a BMW, but it is not as loud as a Harley. It has a quiet, softer sound. I have accidently surprised people walking on the side of the road, they did not hear me until I was right behind them. As for vibration, I have had bikes with less vibration, but the vibration has never seemed excessive to me. Probably the best thing to do would be to borrow one for a ride, if you can, before buying.
I have kept mine exactly as factory stock, and am very pleased with performance in all respects except for the seat, it could be a little softer.
